Here’s what I know
Google won’t find your videos regardless of the host without a video site map – I use Yoast.
The “make up your %” when it comes to adding video to products for increased conversion is patently untrue based on the performance of 500 embedded product videos on my site over 14 years.
The videos are a mix of home grown organic, UGC and manufacturers.
The fact that YouTube is the second largest search engine on the planet did nothing to drive traffic to my ecommerce site (50,000 monthly uniques) over 14 years.
And let’s not forget that YouTube has really weird algorithms that banned my 355 original content videos (launched in 2006) for copyright infringement and hate speech.
We sell food and accessories for pet birds.
If you read the YT analytics software forums, you’ll find this is not uncommon.
I haven’t found video sitemaps needed on any of my websites for Google to find embedded videos. I think they’ve been getting better at this. I even recently saw a featured snippet that was the timestamps of the YouTube video, which was a first.
I could see YouTube being more challenging for Ecom businesses, but I think creators can still combat this by focusing on solving problems while featuring their/product service, but not necessarily “selling” anything. I’ve been able to post some videos that do pretty well at solving problems, and give me a nice affiliate commission from purchases they generate as well.
I can’t speak to the banning of videos, that’s never happened to me before so I’m not sure what to say there. I appreciate your insights!
