Inside Orbit with Ryan Hathaway
Happy Friday! It’s time to introduce you to another member of our talented team, Ryan Hathaway!
Ryan is one of our award winning Web Designers who has been with Orbit for four years now. Along with being an amazing web designer (proof here and here), he’s also my go-to guy for all marketing collateral for Orbit and our events. He has a special talent for designing logos and t-shirts (this is one of my faves).
I’m constantly impressed by Ryan’s creativity and the results he gets for our clients. I’m also impressed by his collection of tattoos, his love for rescues, and the amount of sweets this man can intake.
Everyone, meet Ryan.
Where are you from?
What made you decide to become a designer?
It was when I realized I was never fit for the handshaking and networking needed to be a professional photographer; I knew I could succeed safely behind a computer screen. Also, I’m a visual person, and I like to solve problems, so it all worked out.
How’d you land at Orbit?
They were hiring. I was still debating about becoming a full-on web designer, and they picked me up at the crossroads.
Tell me about a favorite project you worked on and why?
Definitely Nextpoint. Lots of analysis and UX components with this one. Add in a healthy dose of collaboration and a client who was willing to take some risks, and it turned out amazing. Who doesn’t love a little sticky nav every now and then?
What’s a tool or trick that makes your life easier as a designer?
I’ll be honest here: I’m not a fan of tools or tricks. I’m way more of a person who learns one way and leaves it that way, so I tend to take the long route when working. I do use the Rainbow plugin for Firefox frequently to source colors.
What industry blogs or sites do you read religiously?
Most frequently I read Nielsen Norman Group Articles, but I don’t necessarily agree or conform to every study. Usability is a constantly changing game that is tweaked or abandoned at will, so it’s good to know the hows and whys to inform my own decisions and views. Otherwise…
I also read Dribbble, A List Apart for more inspirations and findings, as well as Vulture.com because I’m a pop culture junkie and can out-knowledge anyone with 1995 and later pop culture.
Who’s your hero? Why?
Everyone’s my hero! Anyone who isn’t a jerk and has a bit of general compassion inside is a hero to me. But, I have a big spot in my heart for people that rescue animals – dogs in particular. I wish I could snap them all up and give them a good home and so many treats.
What’s one tip that you can give a client about redesigning a website?
How bout a mishmash of personal design advice disguised as tips?
- Trust your designer.
- Don’t be afraid to take risks.
- Don’t be afraid to be bold.
- A clean site does not have to be boring.
- White space is good, but white space does not have to be white.
What motivates or inspires you?
Making things that work. Whether that’s a well-oiled back-end or a freshly painted exterior. There is so much bad on the internet that making the things we use on a daily basis easier and/or more visually appealing isn’t a bad job to have.
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
- My middle name is plural.
- My facial hair is red (I am not a redhead).
How many cups of coffee do you consume in a day?
Zero. I don’t like coffee. As much tea as my body can handle, though.
What’s your favorite nickname and how did you get it?
Maybe Ry because it’s easy. Or The Hath at Orbit sometimes, because it’s part of my very conventional name. I’m open to suggestions.
If you could see any band (past or present) who would it be?
I’ll have to pass. How about…I would love to be a contestant on Supermarket Sweep or Global Guts. AGGRO CRAG, c’mon!
What beer do you currently have in your fridge at home?
I also don’t like beer. I have a fully stocked liquor cabinet and have all the necessary ingredients to make a killer Old Fashioned.
What do you like to geek out on?
Awww, what a cute pup! If you’d like to say hi to Ry, drop him a line in the comments below.
Bonus points if someone can explain what Supermarket Sweep is…
