Inside Orbit with Pete Croke
Happy Friday, folks! Welcome to the 7th installment of our weekly series “Inside Orbit.” This week we have one of our supremely talented developers, Pete Croke.
The first time I met Pete, the first thing that popped into my head was “Wow. Impressive beard.” Then I wondered if he was in a band. Turns out he was. But not just one band. Four bands.
I’m still impressed by his beard, but that’s not why I think he’s such a rad dude. He’s a genuinely nice guy, can crank out amazing websites, and he’s a crazy talented musician. Oh and once he saved a kitten and nursed it back to health, but I’ll let him tell you about that…
Where are you from?
What made you decide to become a Developer?
I think that this happened the other way around, to be completely honest. After graduating from college, I did several interviews for programming positions, and I received 2 job offers. One was in Chicago doing web development, and I couldn’t pass up city living.
What brought you to Orbit?
Jessica Larsen! I used to be roommates with her husband, so every once in a while, before I worked here, we’d talk shop amongst friends, and Orbit seemed like a place I wanted to be.
Tell me about a favorite project you worked on and why?
I enjoyed working on Paratech, because we were really able to dive into Drupal and learn a lot along the way. That project really helped pave the way for the drupal projects that came after it.
Can you share at least one tool or trick that makes your life easier as a Developer?
Drupal Stack Exchange is a lifesaver.
What is your favorite CMS and why?
I would say Drupal because I know it the best. It has a growing community of contributors who are doing great things to move the web forward. That being said, my favorite CMS is the one that gets the job done. I’m not militant about any of them, but Drupal is the one I am most comfortable with.
What industry blogs or sites do you read religiously?
Who’s your hero? Why?
My parents. They were both born deaf, and being able to see firsthand how they handled life’s challenges is hard for me to put into words, but something I aspire to emulate every single day of my life.
What motivates or inspires you?
Watching my friends collaborate and make music. Putting on a great record and being blown away by what I’m listening to.
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
As a kid it was my dream to become a professional basketball player.
How many cups of coffee do you consume in a day?
At least 2, sometimes as many as 5. A 3pm Americano from Meinl means I’m not getting to bed that night until at least 3am, but you do what you gotta’ do.
What’s your favorite nickname and how did you get it?
petecroke.com. I bought that domain back in 2002 and I used to write about music and random things, and somewhere along the line, some friends started calling me that.
If you could see any band (past or present) who would it be?
It is impossible to name just one, so I’ll give you a top 5:
1) Miles Davis/John Coltrane, preferably Kind of Blue – era, but any combination would do…
2) The original Black Sabbath lineup
3) Fela Kuti and the Afrika ‘70
4) Fugazi (just one last time would be amazing)
5) King Crimson
What adult beverage do you currently have in your fridge at home?
Some kind of Revolution Brewery beer, but I might be out. Thanks for the reminder though!
What do you like to geek out on?
Putting on an album that I’ve listened to hundreds of times, but finding a new sonic detail that I never heard before.
