Inside Orbit with Erin Byrne
We’re now on week four of our ‘Inside Orbit’ series and I’d like to introduce you to Erin Byrne. Erin has been with Orbit for 9 years, which officially makes her a “Vintage Orbiteer” (a new group I started about 6 minutes ago). Besides her passion for coding, she has a huge love for canines, cars, and Freddie Mercury.
Where are you from?
I am from Pontiac, a small town in central Illinois. The population is only about 12,000, and the town is known for its maximum security prison.
What made you decide to become a Developer?
I’ve been addicted to web design and development since I was in middle school. I spent many nights teaching myself everything I could about it.
What brought you to Orbit?
I met Andy at my portfolio show when I was graduating from college in 2004. He was looking for someone who was good at Flash, because it was very popular at the time. I was well-known around school for my Flash animations, and my entire portfolio was done in Flash. Soon after, I was happily working at Orbit.
Tell me about a favorite project you worked on and why?
It’s hard to pick just one, but Zeller Realty Group was a favorite. The project was somewhat challenging, but it was fun. We had a great team working on it, the design was really nice, and the photography was amazing. Best of all, the client was awesome! We really enjoyed working with them.
Can you share at least one tool or trick that makes your life easier as a Developer?
Firebug makes my life a lot easier, as I am sure it does for many developers.
What is your favorite CMS and why?
Mightysite, Orbit’s own CMS. It allows us to build custom websites without extra/unnecessary code, and it’s easy to use for our clients.
What industry blogs or sites do you read religiously?
I mainly just skim the Google Sci/Tech News, and sometimes I look through the articles at Smashing Magazine.
Who’s your hero? Why?
Freddie Mercury. I’ve idolized him since I was a little kid. To me, he’s the most talented and awesome person ever.
What motivates or inspires you?
Working with people who care about the project as much as I do and working on a project that will allow me to flex my front-end muscles. I like a good challenge.
What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
My middle name. Sorry, not telling.
How many cups of coffee do you consume in a day?
Zero. I’ve never liked coffee.
What’s your favorite nickname and how did you get it?
“The Warden” was a good one. I acquired the nickname in college when I had to close the computer labs at night and kick out the lingering students.
If you could see any band (past or present) who would it be?
Queen, preferably in the 1970’s.
What beer do you currently have in your fridge at home?
I never have any beer in my fridge. I have Gold Peak iced tea, Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, and some bottled water.
What do you like to geek out on?
- Rock ‘n roll: I am a rock ‘n roll encyclopedia, especially when it involves Queen.
- Fast cars: I currently have a Pontiac GTO and I have had a couple Corvettes in the past.
Now we know who to go to when Rock ‘n Roll trivia comes around!
